Don’t worry, don’t panic, just be prepared. In this article we share 10 top tips on how to prepare for your job interview, so you make a great impression on your potential employer.
Find out as much as you can about the company or organization. Spend time on their website and social media accounts, talk to friends and contacts and search them on Google to get a broader picture.
2 . Analyze the job description
Spend time thinking about how your skills and experiences match what the employer is looking for. Be ready to share concrete examples of how you have demonstrated a particular skill or ability required in the job.
3. Be yourself
If you are invited for a job interview, employers will have confirmed you have the necessary qualifications – the interview is a chance for you to show off your personality. What are you like to work with? How do you approach problems? What do you enjoy about work?
4. Practice questions and answers
Write down questions you are likely to be asked, come up with answers and practice delivering your answers out loud. If you can rehearse with a friend or family member, you will find it much easier in the actual interview. If you are having your interview via video conference, practice this with a friend or family member so you become comfortable with this format.
Some common interview questions that you should prepare answers for:
- Tell me about yourself.
- Why do you want to work here?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Describe a challenge at work and how you handled it.
- How would your last employer describe you?
- Where do you see yourself in five years?
- What are your hobbies and interests?
- What are your salary requirements?
- What do you know about our company?
- Do you have any questions for us?
5. Dress appropriately
Plan what you are going to wear – have a go-to interview outfit so you have one less thing to worry about. Be smart, feel comfortable and confident. If you are unsure what you are expected to wear, it is OK to ask the interviewer beforehand
6. Be ready on the day
Find out if you need to take anything, e.g. copies of your resume or a portfolio.
If you are travelling to an interview, plan the route beforehand.
If you are having a video interview, make sure you are in a brightly lit room with no distractions.
7. Get into the right state of mind
Sleep well the night before an interview.
Eat healthy meals leading up to an interview.
If you get nervous, remind yourself that you are qualified, you have been invited for an interview! It is not a test, it is a chance for you to share your experiences and show what you would be like to work with.
8. Interview etiquette
Greet the receptionist, the interviewer and everyone else politely and professionally. Shake hands firmly and smile. During the interview, be aware of your body language, make eye contact and look interested.
9. Listen and ask questions
Pay close attention to the questions being asked so you can give your best response. Engage with the interviewer. If you don’t understand a question, ask for clarification.
It is common for an interviewer to ask, “Do you have any questions for us?” Say, “Yes,” and have some questions ready. Example questions:
- What is the biggest challenge someone will face in this job in the first six months?
- Can you describe a typical day or week in the role?
- How is success in this job measured?
- What plans does the company have over the next few years?
- What are the next jobs in the interview process?
10. Follow up
Write a note or email, thanking the interviewers for their time. Include a personal comment about something you enjoyed in the interview. Keeping the conversation going shows you are passionate about the job.
